Microneedling

What is microneedling with SkinPen?

Microneedling or percutaneous collagen induction, creates thousands of controlled tiny micro-injuries in the skin. These injuries stimulate a wound healing response that leads to the production of collagen and elastic fibers. This can improve the appearance and texture of damaged or aged skin. SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device.

Microneedling can be done with a hydrating gel, or can be enhanced with platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP contains growth factors that have been shown to improve results and healing when combined with microneedling.

When is microneedling recommended?

Microneedling can be used for a wide range of conditions including:

  • Scars (acne, surgical, traumatic)
  • Skin rejuvenation (improvement in quality, texture, fine lines, pore size)
  • Stretch marks
  • Drug delivery to the skin

Microneedling should not be done on active acne, inflamed skin, or recently tanned skin.

What should I expect with the treatment?

Prior to treatment, topical numbing cream will be used to dull any discomfort during the procedure. The procedure will be done using a hyaluronic acid gel or PRP to glide the pen on the skin. After treatment the skin will be red and swollen. This will improve in 24 hours, and the skin will be completely healed in 2-7 days. Most patients can continue their daily activities. Your dermatologist will give you clear instructions on how to take care of your skin after your procedure to optimize results.

Depending on the condition being treated and the severity of findings, a series of treatments will be recommended (at least 3). These are usually spaced 4 weeks apart if possible. Increased improvement is seen with each treatment, with final results being noted approximately 3 months after your last treatment.

What are the risks?

Microneedling is a very safe, minimally-invasive procedure. In rare settings, bruising, discoloration, infection, and scarring can occur.

A thorough understanding of anatomy of the skin is necessary to do microneedling safely and effectively and minimize risks. As each individual is unique, your doctor will listen to your concerns, and do a careful assessment prior to treatment to optimize your outcome.

At Phoenix Surgical Dermatology Group, microneedling is used for many purposes in the trained hands of a board-certified dermatologist only. Call to schedule today if you are interested in learning more about microneedling with SkinPen.
